Focus

Creative photography: learning to see, photograph and edit differently

During the 3-day workshop in Flanders, you will learn to look in colours, lines, surfaces and patterns and apply various creative photo techniques. Seeing and photographing a location as a palette of light and colours will not only provide you with skills for taking abstract (landscape) photos; this will also come in handy when you take realistic photos. You can also use editing your photos in a different way, in which enhancing the atmosphere plays a major role, more often.

You learn to photograph with the following creative photo techniques:

  • multiple exposure
  • movement
  • pin hole camera
  • black and white and color tones

Creative and abstract photography in nature and cities in Flanders

During this photo week we will be photographing in the vast polders of the Flemish countryside, along the banks of the Western Scheldt and the Scheldt and in the picturesque harbour town of Lillo. We will use creative techniques to emphasize the atmosphere and the intensity of light and color at the different locations.

Homework beforehand
Before the workshop, you will receive instructions on how to make a pinhole. You will make your own pinhole camera cap (if you don't have a pinhole camera yet, of course). This is not difficult, but if you really have two left hands, you can send us a cap and we will make the cap for you.

Reviews

Intensive days, but learned a lot during the photo weekend creative photography with Photo theme. Visited many different locations, where we could apply the learned technique. Nice that there is time for expert answers to your personal photo questions, that there is always a joint debriefing and the groups are always small.

Participants photo weekend summer 2021
I learned a lot during this photo weekend, also in the field of editing. I liked that I already knew most of the techniques, so that I could really create now.

Program

Daily schedule creative photography workshop Flanders

Thursday July 10

We expect you between 13.30:14 and XNUMX:XNUMX at the Arenberghoeve near the Flemish village of Kieldrecht. After the introduction, we will show you which creative photo techniques you will be working with during this workshop. And we will practice immediately on and around the farm; with a cozy meal on the terrace in between.

Friday- Creative photography in nature

Today we have a long day ahead of us, in which we will alternately take photos on location and discuss the results. Today you will take creative and abstract landscape photos using movement, multiple exposure and pinhole. We will take photos on and around the farm and on the dike along the Westerschelde. In between we will of course also take care of the inner man!

Saturday - Creative cityscapes

The techniques we apply on Wednesday on vast polders, dikes with rows of trees and along the water of the Western Scheldt, we will now release in Fort Liefkenshoek and on the city walls and in the streets and harbour of picturesque Lillo. Between Fort Liefkenshoek and Lillo we take the water bus across the Scheldt. We conclude the workshop around 16:XNUMX.

Online photo review afterwards

As a homework assignment we ask you to make a small portfolio with photos taken with the different techniques - or combinations thereof. A few weeks after this course photo techniques we will meet online to see and discuss everyone's portfolio.
The online discussion will be planned in consultation with the participants.

Level

Photo workshop for more experienced photographers looking for a challenge

We expect participants in the photo workshop creative photography to be familiar with the settings of their camera (level 2). In addition, it is an advantage if you have experience with editing your photos. During the workshop we use programs such as Lightroom and Photoshop to give examples of editing.

If you are new to the creative techniques, we will make sure that you get the hang of applying them this weekend. If you are already familiar with one or more of the creative techniques, the guidance will be focused on applying them and creating exciting compositions.

Accommodation

Stay on a farm in the Flemish countryside

Between Antwerp and the fortified town of Hulst, on both sides of the Belgian-Dutch border, there is a fascinating polder landscape with old and new dikes, creeks and old defense lines. Outside the sea dike lies the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe (drowned land) - the largest salt marsh area in Europe. The much-discussed Hedwige-Prosper polder has still not been completely depoldered. The port of Antwerp is never far away.

We sleep and eat on the Arenberg farm, a working farm with crops and sheep. The farm is located on the Belgian side of the border park. There are 7 guest rooms, each with its own bathroom. And a cozy common room with a view over the meadows and fields of the Waasland.

Would you like to share a room and still have some privacy? One of the rooms has 2 separated rooms; you do share a bathroom.

Transportation

Travel to Flanders by car or public transport

This is basically a photo tour with your own car. If you don't have a car/driver's license, but still want to come along? We pick up participants who come by public transport at the bus station in Hulst. There is a good intercity bus from Breda to Hulst and a bus also runs twice an hour from Goes station. During the photo weekend you can drive with us or one of the other participants to the photo locations.

Additional information

You will be staying in the Waasland in Belgium. So don't forget to bring your passport.
